Overview

Mnemba Island is a small, private island located about 3 kilometers (2 miles) off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, near Matemwe village. It is one of Tanzania’s most famous tropical destinations because of its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters, and exceptional marine life.

The island is surrounded by the Mnemba Atoll Marine Reserve, a protected conservation area with healthy coral reefs. It is considered one of the best snorkeling and scuba diving sites in East Africa. Visitors can see hundreds of species of tropical fish, colorful corals, starfish, octopuses, and sometimes dolphins. During nesting season, green sea turtles come to the beaches to lay their eggs, and humpback whales may be spotted offshore during their migration.

Mnemba Island is privately owned and has an exclusive luxury lodge with only a small number of beachfront villas, offering privacy and high-end service. Access to the island itself is generally reserved for resort guests. However, many tourists visit the waters around the island on boat excursions from nearby beaches such as Matemwe or Nungwi. These trips usually include snorkeling, swimming, dolphin watching, and relaxing on the boat.

The island is especially popular with honeymooners, nature lovers, photographers, and divers because of its peaceful atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to February, when the sea is calm and visibility underwater is excellent.
